Artistic Iron Works

Located in downtown Des Moines, Artistic Iron Works is a metal fabrication shop with expertise in custom railings, fences, iron work, and other steel fabrication needs.  They will work with you to create and install the piece, but need some direction on design.  They also have a selection of “stock” designs they can create.

Dorbin Metal Strip Company

Dorbin sells a broad variety of metal metal profiles and extrusions for general construction and rehabilitation work.  However, their claim to fame with the Des Moines Rehabbers Club is their series of metal weatherstripping for historic double hung windows.  This company is pretty old school… you can’t order direct online.  They prefer email and phone contact to order.

The Des Moines Rerhabbers Club will periodically put together a group order for interested people.  Watch the RenovateDSM email group for notification.

Future Heirlooms
[Via the DSMRC Email Group] I would highly recommend Jerry Hatfield with Future Heirlooms down in Leon, Iowa. He has done restoration work on Hoyt Sherman and has a long list of jobs he has done along with pictures. I had him replicate my quarter sawn white oak and birds eye maple doors (pictures on his site) and some large pieces of wood work. A neighbor just had him complete a large project of replicating woodwork and wainscoting and replicating the large wooden frame for the stained glass windows on their stairs.

NuWall
[Via the DSMRC Email Group] Check out Nu-wall system at http://www.spec-chem.com/nuwal/index.htm. I have used this system to repair our dinning and front parlor ceiling about 10 years ago and it is great. The texture looks like a fine plaster finish when all said and done.

West End Architectural Salvage

Four floors (plus the basement) of old-home awesomeness!  Salvaged architectural pieces like built-in cabinets, signage, hardware, door knobs, furniture, windows, and much more.  Plus a lot of creative “value added” works of art using found objects.  Kind of pricey compared to other local salvage shops, but often this is the place you will end up to find that hard-to-match hinge or interesting piece of furniture.

The space is available for events.
