Recent completion of a land swap deal between the Des Moines YMCA, Wellmark, and Polk County heralds the likely demise of the iconic Riverfront YMCA building.
An imposing and “modern” addition to the downtown Des Moines skyline at the time, the YMCA building was designed by the firm of Wetherell and Harrison. It features arectangular 8-story “United Nations style” apartment tower and five interior and exterior symbolic murals designed by Drake art professor Stan Hess.

The 1.86-acre property at 101 Locust St. along the Des Moines River is the subject of interest for multiple developers, as reported by the Business Record, and considered a prime development site.
It is currently listed for sale by Linda Gibbs and Tim Sharpe of CBRE/Hubbell Commercia for $5.5 million.
