On September 16, the Des Moines’ Landmark Review Board unanimously determined that the downtown YMCA is eligible to be designated a landmark by the City Council. The Council does not have to abide by the Landmark Review Board recommendation. While this designation would not ultimately prevent demolition, it sends a strong message that the building is worth further study.
Significant midcentury architecture is now becoming eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, and this discussion will continue. It becomes particularly important now, as the midcentury buildings age into a time when they will require major rehabilitation and maintenance in order to ensure their continued use.
